Greetings from Port Book and News!

Is it when the downtown Christmas tree is officially lit? Is it when the army of Halloween lawn decorations is finally turned back by an invading force of inflatable turkeys and Santas? Certainly it cannot be when the first ostensibly seasonal pumpkin spice beverage was slid across a counter?

No. The official start to the holiday season is unequivocally the completion of the Port Book and News book tree.

Isn't it beautiful? For this magnificent feat of bibliomasonry we have our own Helena to thank. Her painstaking work was accomplished over multiple days and as holiday traditions go, nothing else really... stacks up.

Thanksgiving is one of three days a year that the store is closed. We will be spending it acknowledging our gratitude and enjoying a day of rest and (hopefully) peace. Then of course we will dive right into the thick of holiday shopping.

If you plan to be downtown for the holiday tree lighting on Saturday (and why wouldn't you, with warm drinks, live music, food trucks, and even Santa himself), consider purchasing a tote bag from the Ice Village ticket booth for discounts around town the whole weekend. We will be offering a "draw for a discount," which could mean up to 25% off, on Friday and Saturday. Word to the wise: those tote bags can be purchased as early as Tuesday.

As thoughts of giving thanks turns to the bustle of giving gifts, rest assured that we have lots of great ideas to fill in the gaps on your shopping list.

We especially like pointing people to our GiveBooks holiday catalog, which has great gift choices from fiction to cookbooks and everything in between, with a Northwest focus and some of our own recommendations. If you like looking around the store, you will enjoy this catalog. Pick up a paper copy in the store, or check it out online.

There is no shortage of interesting things to find this year. Come by, say hello and see for yourself. It gets more important to stress every year, but if you need us to special order an item or are placing an order for shipment, we advise you to do it as early as possible. The United States Postal Service recommended ship-by dates for delivery by 12/25 are:

  • Standard shipping: 12/15
  • First Class/Ground Advantage: 12/16
  • Priority: 12/18

The inevitable shipping delays of mid-December will make it difficult to guarantee delivery by Christmas the longer you wait to order. If you have a book in mind, check with us as soon as you can. Publishers' ship dates will have an impact as well. Come in and see us or give us a call!

Upcoming Author Event: Jonathan Evison

Please note the date change for this event, scheduled for December 8 (not the 1st)

Again and Again cover next to a photo of Jonathan Evison, seated in a restaurant booth with a cup of copy, with the Port Book and News logo and a text header about Evison's December 8 in-person author event.

We are getting more and more excited about our upcoming author event with Jonathan Evison on December 8.

Jonathan is famous for his colorful book tours and his love of beer. His books have deep roots in the Pacific Northwest—several of them quite close to our area—and acknowledge our place, culture, history, and ethos.

Jonathan never misses with his books. All About Lulu won the Washington State Book Award in 2008. West of Here received the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award in 2012, an award his The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving also received. That novel was adapted for film and released as a Netflix original in 2016. This is Your Life, Harriet Chance!, published in 2015 is currently in film development.

2018’s Lawn Boy won an “Alex Award,” given by the American Library Association to a book written for adults that has special appeal to young adults, ages 12-18. A brilliant work, Lawn Boy appears on current “Most Challenged Books” lists, and was featured on Ali Velshi’s Banned Book Club podcast. Legends of the North Cascades, released in 2021, was long-listed for the Joyce Carol Oates prize. Small World, released in January 2022, has been called “a modern classic” and deservedly “The Great American Novel.” These awards and recognitions are only a select few of his accolades.

On this evening, Alan will be in conversation with Jonathan. He hopes to not get in the way of Jonathan’s personality, which has garnered him three nominations for the American Booksellers Association’s “Most Engaging Author” designation. If you have any questions you would like Alan to ask, please send those to us!

Books we are excited about

The Cat Who Taught Zen

For those who enjoyed “Big Panda Tiny Dragon” comes a tale of a cat wise in the ways of Zen who hears of a solitary ancient pine, deep in a maple forest, under which infinite wisdom may be found. So begins a journey of discovery.

Again and Again
by Jonathan Evison

From one of America's most inventive and compassionate novelists comes Again and Again, a poignant and endlessly surprising story about love lost, found, and redeemed.

Who is Eugene (Geno) Miles? A lonely curmudgeonly old man living out his final days in an elder-care facility or a true anomaly: a thousand-year-old-man searching for a love he lost long ago.

Evison's epic of empathy and emotion journeys from Moorish Spain to Victorian England and 1930s Los Angeles, and as we learn the truth about Geno, we learn the biggest truth of all: that love — timeless and elusive — is often right in front of us.

Like all of Jonathan's books, Geno's story reads fast and hits hard, staying with the reader long after finishing the book.

Beware of Chicken
by Casualfarmer

Try a fun slice of life story set in a Chinese xianxia cultivation world. Don't worry. You don't need to know what any of that means to enjoy this story. Beware of Chicken is about a young man who wants to find a peaceful place to live, raise some chickens, and start his own farm. Find out how he accidentally becomes strong, raises a powerful chicken, and turns the typical xianxia storyline on its head. I had a great time reading this book, and I hope you might as well.

Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism
by Rachel Maddow

Rachel Maddow traces the fight to preserve American democracy back to World War II. "Maddow makes clear that the crisis we face today is not new and that this realization should give us hope - because previous generations have faced this threat and overcome it." -- The Washington Post

"The river is rising fast and time is running out. We do not have time to be afraid. We have to act fast." -- Rachel Maddow

An Emotional Evening with Charlotte Warren

Photo of Alice Derry, Charlotte Gould Warren and Kate Reavey at the author event earlier in November.

A special thanks to all those who were in attendance to help Charlotte Warren celebrate the publication of her new collection of poems, If Not Him. It was an emotional evening, with readings from Charlotte along with Alice Derry and Kate Reavey in support. Charlotte's poetry touched everyone deeply. You could hear a pin drop.

It was a great gathering of friends. We and the poets “thank you for the privilege of your time."

Reading If Not Him demonstrates, in the clearest of language, how “happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light”- Albus Dumbledore

Upcoming Happenings and Events

Fourth Wing Night!

November started off strong out of the gate, with our Charlotte Warren reading and a midnight release for Iron Flame night. What a treat to see some excited and loyal readers braving a cold November night to get their hands on a book they loved. Wouldn't it be great if there were more midnight releases?

We have more to look forward to in upcoming weeks.
